There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which gambling den wagering is illegal. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime spot, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are allegedly required to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The 1st Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel complex that contains numerous comforts on top of the gambling den, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight gaming tables.
