There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where casino wagering is prohibited. Eight gambling halls are based in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime destination, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 1700, and though visas are apparently needed to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many borders.

The initial Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary ship gambling den, contains 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the common gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that features a number of luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 table games.
